# Feed sample and silage analysis

What is your silage worth? With a feed sample you know how much energy and protein your roughage contains, so you can adjust the ration to it.


## Know what you feed

Every silage is different. The moment of mowing, the weather and the ensiling together determine the quality. An analysis shows what you are really feeding.

This allows you to fine-tune the ration and see in time whether you need to make adjustments.

## What the laboratory measures

With a silage analysis you receive these values, among others:

- **Dry matter**: How much feed it really contains
- **Energy**: The feed value for your animals
- **Protein**: Crude protein and its utilisation
- **Sugar**: For palatability and preservation
- **Minerals**: Such as calcium and phosphorus

## How we take the sample

1. **Agree on the silages**: We agree on which silage clamps or bales we sample.
2. **With the silage corer**: We take the sample with a silage corer at several spots, so that it represents the whole clamp.
3. **Airtight packaging**: We seal the sample airtight, so that it does not change.
4. **To the laboratory**: The sample goes to the laboratory as quickly as possible.

## When to have silage sampled

Only have silage sampled once it has fully fermented. This usually takes a number of weeks after ensiling.

## Questions about feed samples

### Can you also sample bales?

Yes. With bales we take a sample from several bales of the same cut, so that it gives a good picture.

### What do I do with the result?

With the result you can adjust the ration yourself or together with your feed adviser.

### What does it cost?

That depends on the type of sample, the analysis and the distance to your farm. You always receive a quote in advance.
